Magnolia

A Tree Like a Summer Evening

I stand beneath a tree that seems older than everything around it. Its crown reaches over 20 meters into the sky, leaves gleaming like polished leather, their copper-red, downy undersides appearing as if dusted with cinnamon. A botanical luxury revealed only by the wind. And among them: porcelain-white blooms as large as two hands.

The fragrance hits like a wave – citrusy, vanilla-sweet, heavy. Not delicate, but physical. Almost too much, yet exactly right. A plant you don't grow for its flowers, but for its presence.

A Tree of Endurance

Magnolia grandiflora originates from the southeastern United States – and it carries its heritage proudly. While our native magnolias bloom briefly and disappear again, it remains. Evergreen. Flowering from May through September, sometimes longer. In my Hamburg garden grows the cultivar 'Victoria'. It's particularly frost-hardy – and still shows individual blooms even in October.

Older Than the Bees

Magnolias are among the oldest flowering plants in Earth's evolution. They emerged before bees existed – their pollinators were beetles. Perhaps this explains their almost prehistoric elegance: thick petals, robust textures, a quiet self-assurance that has endured for millions of years.

The American Way

German gardens are full of Asian magnolias: M. soulangeana, M. stellata, M. kobus. A brief firework in April, then foliage until autumn, then winter dormancy. Magnolia grandiflora doesn't play along. It stays. Leaves, blooms, bearing – everything remains. While other trees retreat, it stands there. Steadfast.

Room for Greatness

These trees need space to breathe. No cramped courtyards, no windy corners. Best: a sheltered location with some evening sun, well-draining soil – and patience. Those who give it time receive a tree that grows slowly but stays long.
Magnolia grandiflora is not a tree for the impatient. But for all who know: Some beauty takes time. And some fragrances are never forgotten.
